Session 1: Current Global Challenges

Session Details

With farmers and agri-cooperatives around the world confronted by unprecedented pressures from climate change, soaring energy prices, labour shortages and the specter of scarcity (availability and affordability) in farm inputs, this panel will examine how this increased volatility and inflated expenses affect farm profitability and competitiveness.

Dr. Manuel Otero
Director General, IICA

As Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) since 2017, Dr. Otero has focused his administration on consolidating the modernization of the agency of the Inter-American System, while ensuring that it fulfills its mission to promote the agricultural and rural development of its 34 Member States, through the provision of technical cooperation of excellence.

Tiina Linnainmaa
Vice-President, Cogeca

Tiina is an experienced dairy farmer from Finland. She is also a very active member in the agriculture and agri-cooperative world, both nationally and internationally. She is a Vice Chairman of cooperative service organisation Pellervo, First Vice Chairman of the Federation of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners MTK and is one of the Vice-Presidents of the European umbrella organisation for agricultural cooperatives Cogeca.

Session Details

This panel will (building up on the global challenges presented in the previous session) examines the multilateral trade implications alongside with emerging opportunities and the necessary tools for agriculture in global agri-food markets.

Stefanie has been serving as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) since February 20, 2023. She was previously Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence and Deputy High Commissioner for Canada to the United Kingdom.

Joseph Glauber
Senior Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute

Joe Glauber is a Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, DC where his areas of interest are price volatility, global grain reserves, crop insurance and trade. Prior to joining IFPRI, Glauber spent over 30 years at the U.S. Department of Agriculture including as Chief Economist from 2008 to 2014. As Chief Economist, he was responsible for the Department’s agricultural forecasts and projections, oversaw climate, energy and regulatory issues, and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation.

Massimiliano Giansanti
Vice-President, Copa

Born in Rome, Massimiliano is an agricultural entrepreneur that actively supports progress and innovation in farming, and promotes growth and innovation in the agricultural field. 

He is the President of Agricola Giansanti and CEO of the Agricultural Group Di Muzio, present in the provinces of Rome, Viterbo and Parma. The companies, specialized in the production of cereals, kiwis, milk and animal products, are active both in the agro-industrial and agro-energetic fields, through the production of photovoltaic electric energy.

Session Details

Following the disruptions introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chain disruptions continue to drive mounting global food security crises, the need for greater food supply chain resilience and crisis preparedness will be explored.

Maximo Torero
Chief Economist, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Maximo joined the organization in January 2019 as Assistant Director-General for the Economic and Social Development Department.  His major research work lies mostly in analyzing poverty, inequality, importance of geography and assets (private or public) in explaining poverty, and in policies oriented towards poverty alleviation based on the role played by infrastructure, institutions, and on how technological breakthroughs (or discontinuities) can improve the welfare of households and small farmers.

Palle Borgström
Vice-President, Copa

Palle’s interest for farming started early as well as his engagement in agricultural cooperatives and interest organisations.  Among many other missions, Palle has been a member of the board of Arla Foods (2008-2017) and deeply engaged in issues regarding dairy market development and payment for farmers.  

He was elected to the board of Federation of Swedish farmers, LRF in 2010 and was elected as president in 2017.  

Zippy Duval.
President, American Farm Bureau Federation

President of the American Farm Bureau Federation since January 2016, Zippy Duvall is a third-generation farmer from Georgia. In addition to a 400-head beef cow herd for which he grows his own hay, Duvall and his wife, Bonnie, also grow more than 750,000 broilers per year. In December 2017, Duvall was appointed to the White House Advisory Committee for Trade
Policy and Negotiations.
